Alma is the mother (or dam) of Esperanza and the maternal grandmother of Spirit. She appears in Esperanza.

Appearance[]

Alma is described as a delicate beauty, a small-boned mare with copper eyes and a lovely face. Her buckskin coat turns rough and thick in the winter but shines golden-brown in the summer sun. She has a black mane and tail, and closely resembles her grandson, Spirit.

Personality[]

Alma is described as determined and stubborn. She also doesn't like to be the leader, preferring to hang back and let bolder horses make the decisions.

History[]

In Esperanza[]

After the herd's leaders die, Alma takes on six horses and leads in their places. Three break off along the way, leaving only Willow, Aspen, and Midnight to travel with them. Eventually, Alma finds a larger herd to merge with.
